Authentic and Real Life Experiences

Lessons that give learning meaning so that students connect and transfer knowledge and skills across a range of contexts and not just know on paper.

Why are we still giving kids sheets of paper that have straight lines on them and asking them to use a ruler and measure them, when they will never be asked to measure like that in the real world?

Kids across a range of NZ schools were given a piece of A4 paper and asked to draw a line that was 1 metre. They were prompted by having visible different measurement tools they could choose from. Not one kid thought to use the string and bend the line so it would fit on the page.

Kids are learning skills that they can not transfer to the real world. When I think of measurement I think - builder, engineer, graphic design, any kind of construction...
