Restrict Ideas
I found this clip really interesting. It is short and sweet and made me realise something I often do when giving instructions, but do without thinking about it.
I often say to my students about breaking down goals in terms of workload into small chunks etc, otherwise, you end up doing nothing.
This video made me really think about not only breaking down steps to scaffold students but adding restrictions , especially relevant to writing, actually can help promote creativity, rather than hinder it like some may expect.
I have several students that say they take a long time to get ideas going and they find it really frustrating. When they do eventually get writing, they have fantastic ideas.
I often hear people say - that's why you brainstorm - it will help get the ideas flowing before you write... Well, that might work for some, but for others, brainstorming means you still need to write an idea, and if you have no ideas, then what...?
This video has given me the clear words and way of explaining restriction to my students. For some students' and some lessons, I will plan for this is my questioning and instructions without them realising. For other students, this will be a discussion so that it is a tool they can use as they move to higher levels of education and support them to be motivated and independent learners.
I need to deliberately plan for this more.
